Course description:
You can spend a summer studying in Rome, Italy at John Cabot University (JCU). John Cabot University (JCU) was founded in 1972 as a four-year college of liberal arts and sciences, with all courses taught in English (except Italian language and literature). Today JCU is a unique accredited independent university with American roots and a distinctively international character, offering its students both European and American degrees.
The structure of the university, as well as its teaching style, is American in nature. John Cabot's main campus is situated near St. Peter's and the Vatican in the charming Trastevere quarter, with a fine-arts annex on the other side of the Tiber River. Trastevere is characterized by narrow, winding, cobbled streets, it is full of small trattorie, restaurants, clubs and coffee bars. This is a popular destination for students and young professionals, so it is crowded and vibrant in the evenings. The central Rome location means that students are literally surrounded by the history and art of thousands of years.
While at JCU, you will take either one or two courses during a summer session. Since John Cabot is a comprehensive university with its courses taught in English, you have a wide range of courses from which to choose, including:
- Art History
- Studio Art
- Business Administration
- Classical Studies
- Communications
- Computer Science
- Economics
- English
- History
- Italian
- Mathematics
- Natural Science
- Philosophy
- Political Science
- Psychology
- Religion
- Theater and Film Studies
JCU also complements its summer course offerings with unique Summer Institutes open to all interested students. For the Summer 2010, they are offering:
- Summer Session I: Creative Writing and Literary Translation in Rome
- Summer Session II: International Communication in Rome
Summer housing is in the Gianicolo Residence, a 230-bed residence hall with 24/7 security and live-in resident assistants located just five minutes from campus. In the event that the Residence is filled to capacity, students will be housed in a shared apartment located within a 30 minute walk or bus ride to JCU.You will live as the Romans do, in an authentic Roman neighborhood with its many coffee bars, restaurants, trattorie, gelaterie, and open-air markets.
The Gianicolo Residence is JCU’s apartment-style, academic living community in Trastevere, just a 5 minute walk from the Guarini Campus and a 10 minute walk from the Tiber Campus. The building has 70 independent apartments housing 250 students. The apartments function as fully independent living units which include an equipped kitchen, 1-2 bathrooms depending on the number of students, and a common area. It is important to note that in Italy, the “common area” might not denote a separate room (like a living room) but additional seating space in the kitchen.
The apartments are usually four to six students living in shared rooms. Each of the apartments has kitchens, bathrooms, and common living areas. Linens are provided, as is access washing machines either in the apartments or nearby. None of the apartments have air conditioning or clothes dryers, which is very common in Rome and Europe in general. Apartments in Trastevere are in the geographic area between the Trastevere train station and JCU campuses.
While JCU residences are standardized in terms of basic amenities, they may vary in aesthetics; students must understand that University housing is Italian by nature in every way, including but not limited to its structure, surroundings, utilities, furnishings, and neighbors.
